Tinbe and Rochin

Back to Weapons

The Tinbe is a small shield used in conjunction with a small spear called a “Rochin”. The Tinbe is generally made of wood, leather, metal, and in some cases, a tortoise shell. The exact origin of this weapon is not known, but it may have come from the use of the “Zinkasa” (Straw Hat) and Tanto daggers. This weapon is not widely practiced in Mainland Japan and in Okinawa there are only a few dojo that still preserve this weapon.
