Alice Chung




Alice’s exposure to weaponry began at the age of eleven when she was seconded to the Guangzhou Wushu Team in China. There she learned the many uses of various Chinese weapons, with her specialty being the broadsword and steel whip. Alice began her Okinawa weapons training in the late nineties with Sensei William Chung under the Suzuki-ha Kobudo system.

In 2001, Alice received her black belt in weaponry with Soke Seiko Suzuki of the Suzuki-ha Kobudo. In 2002, Alice joined the Ryukyu Kobudo Tesshinkan to expand her knowledge in Kobudo and was awarded her black belt by Sensei Hidemi Tamayose, the President of Ryukyu Kobudo Tesshinkan.

Alice was ranked in the Top Ten in Forms and Weapons during the mid eighties to early nineties by Karate Illustrated and Karate-Kungfu Illustrated Magazines. Alice was also a member of the original Atlantic Richfield Karate Team and the Transworld Oil Karate Team. In 1986, Alice was the 2nd in the world for Wushu at the 2nd World Wushu Championship taking home 4 silver medals.

Alice is presently a member of the Ryukyu Kobudo Shimbukan under Hiroshi Akamine Kaicho in Tomigusuku, Okinawa. She is the Chief Instructor for Karate at the Arbutus Club and also teaches at both the Sea Island and Cambie Dojo. Alice also teaches Kobudo at the Dunbar Dojo.

On August 4th, 2017, Alice Chung was awarded the rank of Sandan by Akamine Hiroshi Sensei, the Kaicho for Ryukyu Kobudo Shimbukan.
